Wardian Cases
Wardian cases were the idea of a Dr. Nathaniel Ward in 1827. Dr.
Ward was experimenting with caterpillar cocoons and had place on in a jar
with some leaf and bark at the bottom. He noticed that after a short
time ferns began to grow inside the closed jar from the fern spores on
the leaf. Dr. Ward continued to leave the fern inside the closed
jar and watched as the fern flourished inside its self contained environment.
This was the beginning of the terrarium, as we know it today.
With the advent of this discovery scientist were able to transport plants
from different continents and have them survive the journey. During
the Victorian period, no respectable Victorian home would have been without
a Wardian Case in the parlor.
Today the Wardian Case is making come back. In our busy society,

having to spend lots of time taking care of them. Just plant your
